“As a senior in my seventies and feeling pressured with all the needs required for home maintenance, I decided to downsize from a four-bedroom home to a one-bedroom apartment. I had no idea how I was going to do it and seemed to circle from room to room trying to declutter without making progress. I knew I needed help. It was uncomfortable to think about inviting a stranger in to go through all my personal things.
When I learned Mary Ann was a professional organizer specializing in the KonMari method, I was thrilled. I’ve known Mary Ann for over forty-five years, starting when she would babysit for my children. She would be organized, compassionate, patient and a great support person throughout the project. I was not sure of how the KonMari method worked, but I trusted Mary Ann and her enthusiasm and belief in the process.
It was not long before I “got it” and started to trust the method completely. The clutter was leaving, and I was fine. The feelings of stress and being overwhelmed started to subside after the first session. I felt like weights were being lifted from my shoulders as the clutter was removed and my favorite possessions were left to surround me. My house felt happier! An unexpected bonus were the treasures I re-discovered along the way. For example, my father authored a famous story called Gertie the Duck and I used to give copies of the book as baby gifts. I thought I had run out of copies but discovered a whole stash when we worked on books -which was wonderful as they are extremely expensive on Amazon!
Most important was that with Mary Ann’s guidance, I was able to complete a task that I really did not want to do, but also did not want to leave to my children. Because Mary Ann and I went through each item, I have no regrets about the decisions I made. I’ve successfully downsized and even expect to have extra room in my new home. I’m free to move, my children are happy, and I have been able to pass along some sentimental items to family and friends and enjoy the moment with them.
